Solar power systems depend on solar panels, which function to convert sunlight to electricity . Solar panels are an incredible invention that give ordinary homeowners the ability to produce their own energy , cutting their electricity bills and decreasing their impact on the environment .

Solar panels are essentially collections of small solar cells, which are wired together and housed in a weatherproof case . A small electrical current is given off whenever these solar cells are struck by sunlight . A sufficient number of solar cells when combined can produce a tremendous amount of current . Even if one cell malfunctions , the others will continue working and the panel overall remains effective .

The most recent generation of solar cells offer greater efficiency and durability than previous cells . These new models are capable of producing more power from less sunlight than previous cells . All solar cells have a certain threshold at which the amount of sunlight experienced results in electricity output . Modern cells require less sunlight to produce power than older models did .

Modern solar panels generate more power in total than previous units , and this means that it’s possible to generate enough power for in-home use with fewer panels . It’s therefore possible to receive an equal or greater amount of power while dedicating less roof space and less of an initial financial investment to a solar power generation project . All this explains why a growing number of people are taking advantage of what solar power can provide .

Solar panels now frequently have micro-inverters built in . In the past, most solar power systems relied on one large inverter, usually placed near the electrical panel of the home . Direct Current (DC) electricity produced by the solar panels would be transferred to this single inverter, which then converted it to Alternating Current (AC) electricity, the kind which is used in the home .

The difficulty with this configuration was that a loss of power was almost always experienced as the electricity travelled along the long wires from the panels to the inverter . Now that the panels themselves are equipped with their own inverters , the conversion from DC to AC can be done without the same loss of power .

In a sense, the new solar panels with micro-inverters function as their own power plants . The elimination of the large inverter makes the whole process of wiring much simpler , as well . Also , this means that it’s possible to take a more incremental approach to establishing a system for generating solar power , simply adding panels as needed . For further info about micro inverters, go to Solar Micro Inverter.

No matter how you choose to set up a solar power system, it’s worth considering these modern solar power panels . The most important thing to keep in mind is that these panels will generate more energy at a lower cost , allowing users to enjoy the free power of the sun for longer than ever before .

Over the last decade, residential wind turbines have improved substantially, to the point that they’re now a realistic, serious option for a growing number of homeowners. The improved designs of today generate more energy from less wind than was previously possible, thanks in part to advanced materials and technologies. Furthermore, there are all kinds of styles and sizes of residential turbines on the market now, and consumers are certain to find one that meets their needs with regard to size and power.

Benefits

Permanent energy

We’ll never run out of wind (though the same can’t be said about some other sources of energy). The wind will keep on providing energy – as long as we do what it takes to harness it – permanently. Fossil fuels can’t make that claim. Oil and natural gas supplies are not permanent. As hard as it may be to imagine, we will eventually run out of those things. Wind energy isn’t affected by economic factors in the same way – it will always be cheap and plentiful, unlike fossil fuels.

Power at no cost

If you’re using wind energy, there’s no more need to keep track of kilowatt hours or anything like that. The one-time cost associated is that which comes from installing a wind turbine; once you’ve done that, wind power is absolutely free. The previously impossible goals of going off the grid and saying goodbye forever to electric bills are now widely available thanks to residential wind turbines.

No emissions

Wind power is totally free of pollution. Fossil fuels, on the other hand, result in a lot of pollution. You can reduce your carbon footprint significantly by switching to wind power.

Forget about foreign oil

Dependence on foreign oil is an important issue that affects us not just as individuals, but as a country. One of the most effective ways to reduce dependence on foreign oil to change to wind power, as this will eliminate the need for oil of any sort.

Power day and night

Residential wind turbines can produce electricity 24 hours a day in any weather. Solar panels, meanwhile, only generate electricity when the sun is out. Therefore, with solar panels, it’s likely that you’ll still be required to buy in electricity from a power company. Wind power, though, isn’t subject to these limitations.

No problems with space or positioning

Another advantage of wind power is that, unlike with solar panels, you don’t need to worry about the surrounding environment so much. This means that solar panels aren’t a good option for homes that have a lot of shade, or where the roof isn’t aligned appropriately. The function of a wind turbine isn’t restricted in any way by the orientation of your home. Wind turbines are also more efficient in terms of use of space than solar panels are.

Disadvantages

Startup cost

Even though the ongoing costs of wind energy are miniscule, some potential users are intimidated by the startup costs. The money you’ll save from using the electricity produced by your own wind generator, though, is more than enough to make up for the initial cost. Furthermore, you can seriously reduce that cost by building your own wind generator, as many people do. To read more about how to do it yourself visit Wind Generator Kit.

Height necessity

If you’re using a larger type of wind turbine, you’ll need to be certain that it’s mounted high enough to be exposed to consistent, strong wind. It may be necessary to mount the turbine at a significant height depending on the level of surrounding buildings and trees. In these cases, it’s often necessary to mount wind generators on towers or other tall structures. The HOA permits or approvals that can be necessary in order to carry this out can increase the up-front cost of starting up a wind generator. Though, again, building a homemade wind generator can help mitigate the costs.

Wind requirement

Although wind power doesn’t have the same strict requirements for generation as solar power does, it does need consistent wind. Thus, the most appropriate locations for wind generators are those which experience the strongest and most consistent wind. In other words, the fewer buildings and trees are present in the area, the better it will be for wind energy production. While you can produce significant wind power in areas with tall trees or buildings by placing the wind generator on a tall structure, it is certainly still better and more cost-effective to generate wind power in areas that don’t have these features. One of the guides mentioned above will tell you how to build a wind turbine.

These characteristics make wind power different from any other type of power. For most people, the disadvantages appear to be pretty insignificant in comparison to the advantages. Even solar power doesn’t match wind power in terms of versatility and convenience. Where solar power may suffer somewhat, wind power truly shines. The only disadvantage shared by both types of power is the startup cost. If you’re able to build your own wind generator, though, even this obstacle can be largely eliminated.

A solar power system for your home is a great option if you’d like to lower or even eliminate your monthly electricity bill. Solar power systems have seen a series of improvements over the years, and they’re now more efficient, more affordable, and easier to install than ever before. One of the most recent improvements is the addition of micro inverters to solar panels. There are various kinds of solar power inverters used today. You can go toSolar Power Inverter for further information about solar power inverters.

In most cases, solar systems have the same basic configuration. The solar panels are placed on the roof of the home, or in a location where they will be exposed to as much sun as possible. When the panels are exposed to sunlight, they generate DC electricity.

This DC electricity is then sent to a large inverter, which is generally located near the home’s electrical panel. Appliances in the home use AC electricity, and the inverter converts the DC electricity to AC for this purpose.

Previous solar power systems had long wires carrying the electricity from the panels to the inverter, and this cause a fair amount of power loss. Low voltage DC electricity is especially susceptible to power loss. The only solution in the past was just to produce more power to make up for the loss.

The answer to the problem of power loss is now here,in the form of solar micro inverters. Micro inverters are small inverters that are built into the panels themselves, converting the electricity on the spot. This way, the solar panel provides a complete solution for your energy needs. AC electricity can move a longer distance with less loss than DC electricity. This also removes the stress of having to upgrade your inverter, as the micro inverters take the stress away from the regular inverter, or even eliminate it completely, meaning that you’re able to expand your system according to your needs. Despite the slightly greater up-front cost, these advanced solar panels will enable you to save even more money in the long run, thanks to their superior efficiency.

Virtually any solar power system that utilizes batteries requires a solar charge controller. Their function is to regulate the power moving from the solar panels to the batteries. If you want information about solar charge controllers, visit Solar Charge Controller.

One of the oldest existing methods of power generation is the use of wind turbines . With time , designs for wind generators have steadily improved, especially when it comes to how the blades that are responsible for turning the turbines’ rotors have been constructed . Today’s smaller, quieter wind turbines, which generate much more power from much less wind , are a direct result of these advancements .

The earliest wind turbine blades were essentially just large mats made from reeds . This style of turbine blade suffered from a lack of durability . They’d have to be replaced often , especially if they were exposed to high winds .

Cloth sails were the next stage in the development of wind turbine blades . Thanks to this blade design, early windmills were able to harness wind power effectively for processing grain .

The next major type of blade to be introduced was the wood blade, which was often combined with a horizontal axis configuration . These blades were inspired mainly by airplane blades . The key advantage of wooden blades over earlier types was that they could be both lighter and stronger, and thus they were much more appropriate for generating power in a wider variety of conditions .

These improvements made it possible to generate electricity with wind turbines . The earliest wind turbines of this type were somewhat small in size, but they would soon be scaled up and used in commerical settings .

At this time , the difference between horizontal axis turbine blades and vertical axis blades became that much more distinct . In terms of horizontal axis blade design, the majority of the changes would manifest themselves as differences in blade shape and pitch, materials, and the number of blades used per rotor .

In most cases, 3-blade designs came to be used for horizontal axis wind turbines, as they have the best balance of stability and rotor speed . Composite blades, which offer superior strength and flexibility in addition to lightweight construction , are used for most modern turbines . Composite blades give wind turbines the ability to spin at higher speeds and generate more energy as well as pick up low-speed winds, making them significantly more efficient .

Also , vertical axis wind turbines have seen a number of improvements which have made them appropriate for a wide variety of applications . The rotation for these units is usually provided by aspects that take advantage of either the lift or drag of the wind .

Regardless of wind direction , modern vertical axis turbines can always convert it into energy . Horizontal axis turbines don’t provide quite the same consistency of production . Their capacity to produce power at lower elevation makes them especially well suited to residential use .

The efficiency of solar cells has improved significantly since the first modern silicon solar cell was introduced . Bell Labs released the first silicon solar cell on April 25, 1954 . It had an efficiency of about 6%, meaning that it was able to convert about 6% of the sun’s energy it collected to electricity .

While it might not seem like much, this was actually a major improvement over the previous type of solar cell, the selenium solar cell . The efficiency rating for selenium solar cells was only around 0.5% .

Since then, the bulk of the research in this area has been put toward the task of increasing the efficiency of solar cells , and reducing the cost of producing them . It’s proven to be possible, using rare materials, to create cells with up to 40% efficiency . The manufacturing cost for these cells is over 100 times greater than that of the current standard, 8% efficient cells . Production cost is possibly the greatest barrier to solar power becoming more widely used .

Under ideal conditions, the sun can provide about 1,000 watts of power per square meter . This figure is the basis for defining the production of a specific solar cell . Dust, pollution, elevation, temperature, weather and other factors can have an effect on sunlight intensity . Sunlight intensity can even be reduced on a worldwide scale and over extended periods of time due to events like volcanic eruptions . Elevation has an impact on solar cell efficiency in that greater elevation actually brings increased efficiency . This is due to the fact that , as elevation gets higher, the air gets thinner, and the effects of dust and pollution are decreased .

Multicrystalline solar cells are now commercially available, and these output at around 14-19% efficiency . However, this type of cell is not expected to improve much beyond that benchmark . Instead, many researchers are pinning their hopes on amorphous silicon cells, which are currently around 8% efficient .

At present, what would we need to do to replace all of the fossil fuel -based energy generation in the US with solar power ? To supply all of the electricity currently produced in the US , it would take a little more than 10,000 square miles of solar panels . Even now, there is enough unused desert in the US to meet this requirement .

Solar power systems, in order to provide power even when the sun isn’t shining , need to also involve some form of power storage . Many power companies are investigating “smart grid” systems involving the use of battery banks to address this problem . Batteries could also represent an answer to the problem of spikes in demand presented by hot days .

Solar cell efficiency has improved substantially , from 0.5% to as high as 40%, since solar cells were first introduced . In the last few years in particular, they’ve also become a lot more affordable .

Everywhere you turn lately , someone or something is telling you to definitely Go Green! Years ago , going green meant with envy, however these days people are getting hip to the fact the environment is in turmoil but it ’s on us to aid insure that it is a better place.

Now, I’m no Greenpeace Campaigner , however I do my part . I recycle. I turn off lights. I even decided to buy those ugly spiral luminosity bulbs for lamps in my domicile . With some people , these little life modifications are sufficient . For some who wish to do more, there are surprisingly many things they can do to diminish their carbon track in the world.

Ever consider going green on your vacation? A short time ago , I visited Tulum, a small beach town about 90 minutes south of Cancun. While the jungle makes up over 90 % of the environment , it’s not exactly the green I’m talking about. For years, Tulum has been the host to a rising quantity of eco-friendly resorts. These Tulum hotels function nearly solely on wind and solar power although numerous do possess gas or diesel driven back-up generators just in case. Many eco resorts do use wind and solar for the bulk of their power needs.

In Tulum, these eco-cabana resorts line the pristine seashores leading into Sian Ka’an Biosphere, a 1.3-million-acre nature reserve stretching the length of the Caribbean coast. These resorts present a range from rustic cabanas located by the beach to luxurious adobe-style rooms . Smaller compared to the major resorts in Cancun however , the majority of usually do not lack in services . Several resorts like Playa Azul and Los Lirios Cabana Resort as well as super opulent Blue Tulum Hotel offer full spa services from beach-side massages to face therapies using natural Mayan skincare products. Virtually all of them have bistros that serve up scrumptious , epicurean cuisine well into the evening. The range of options was a pleasing surprise!

My original visit to an eco-friendly resort was a couple of years ago in Tulum. I’m no camper, by any stretch , so when I read the quick inventory of things to bring , my tension level went up a degree upon seeing flashlight as one of the must-haves.

A flashlight? I thought. What’s up with the electricity? There’s none past 11pm, that’s what! Immediately , some people would in no way even ponder staying in a place that doesn’t have full electrical power running 24 hours a day , seven days a week. But , I was desperate for the holiday . I figured I’d go to see what this whole eco-resort thing was all about.

It was 2006 and my first occasion in Tulum. I’ve been back three times since! My experience was spectacular . Being at the seaside takes care of the fear that it’ll be very hot in the room lacking A/C. The lights being turned off later than 11pm wasn’t an issue at all. I had my flashlight, nevertheless there were also Tiki torches lighting up the entire property, so yeah, electrical energy wasn’t sorely missed at all. On the whole , my opening endeavor into eco-tourism was no different than any other trip I’d had in the past.

I must note that a few of the eco resorts in Tulum do have 24 hour electrical energy , except you must definitely check those details prior to departing if that is a priority for you.

The need to be green has reached way beyond the Greenpeace set. Think about it and contemplate doing greater than your part.

In addition to green shopping bags and fuel efficient cars, there are a number of things you can do at home to expand your energy utilization consumption. Newly constructed buildings tend to be green buildings, with many energy-saving features already in place. Whether you have an older home or a brand new home, there are a number of changes and ideas to save energy, and that in turn will save you money.
You basically cannot miscalculate the importance of turning off a light to save energy. When your lights are on, be sure to burn only the new-fangled energy efficient light bulbs. These compact incandescent light bulbs use up to 75% less energy and up to ten times as long. What this means to you is you are saving money on energy and creating less misuse.

In all places you go these days, you see “Save The Earth” t-shirts (made of non animal materials, of course) and “organic” shopping bags. More and more people are turning in the keys to their enormous, fossil fuel gobblingSUVs for a greener ride in a more fuel resourceful car. As green living becomes conventional more and more people understand the need to adopt a greener lifestyle to prevent further damage to our planet.
Your heating and cooling bills areprobable one of your largest power drains. Be sure to keep your thermostat set at a lower temperature in the winter months and a higher temperature in the summer months. Steer clear of heating and cooling the outdoors by ensuring your doors and windows are air-tight. Think about replacement windows to save energy and keep your heated or cooled air indoors.
Another large energy consumption area is your water heater. You use hot water for washing clothes, bathing, cleaning dishes, and a number of other things. If you don’t already have one, consider improving to a gas water heater to save energy.

When you have used up all of these energy-saving measures in your habitat, you should see a considerable drop in your monthly energy resourceful habits. But you can still do more! Most days, you have a vibrant energy source shining down on your house, and unless you have solar panels installed, this energy is simply going to waste. If you’ve looked into using solar power at your house beforehand previously but have rejected it due to high cost, take a look at the reasonable do-it-yourself solar panel kits.

Reviews of the top three programs are here at: http://saveenergyideasforhome.blogspot.com .

These kits are designed for the weekend do-it-yourselfer to easily construct your own solar panels as well as to install them yourself. What’s more, when you take on the construction and labor element of installing solar panels to your house, you significantly cut down on the overall cost. These solar power kits can diminish decrease your energy usage by up to 80%, resulting in a truly green lifestyle that anyone can take advantage of.
When you adopt green living ways to save energy, not only are you defending protecting the healthiness of the planet, but you will be saving a few dimes in the process.

Daniel McDowell shares a passion for all things green and environmentally friendly. Incorporating solar energy systems for over twenty years, his reviews of the top solar programs as well as wind energy are here at: http://saveenergyideasforhome.blogspot.com
